October proved to be a banner month for Kappa Alpha Lambda Sorority this year.  While celebrating the Sorority’s fifth year of service, members across the nation gave back through a variety of partner and organizationally sponsored programs.

Colonies and chapters planned a host of events marking several of the Sorority’s national commitments.  In addition to recent Halloween festivities, there were Members’ Only retreats and National Coming Out Day festivities.  Long standing partners of both the AIDSwalk and Susan G. Komen Foundations, more than 75% of the Sorority’s colonies and chapters participated in Breast Cancer Awareness events and AIDSWalk fundraising efforts.

“Kappa Alpha Lambda has always been dedicated to our philanthropic partnerships,” National President Elaine Banks stated.  “The Fall calendar is always full of activities, but the members make it happen because we value our commitment to the community.”

Other Sorority members would agree.  The members of Los Angeles Colony planned and completed eight separate events during the month. “It was certainly a lot to pull off,” one member said.  “But, it’s our duty.  Service comes first.  We’ve accomplished a lot in five years because of that focus.”

Change has been a recurring theme in our country over the past few months.  In every sector from the housing market to the political arena, the world as we know it has become one of rapid, sweeping change.  In less than 120 days, our government will change in reflection of an historic event:

The United States welcomes its first African-American President.

It is my sincere pleasure to, on behalf of Kappa Alpha Lambda Sorority, Incorporated, congratulate President-elect Obama on his historic achievement.  The leadership that he and Vice-President elect Joe Biden will provide will prove critical to the progressive movement of our country in a positive direction.

President-elect Obama’s policies reflect a mantra of hope, insight into the needs of our diverse American community, and inclusion.  With the help of the members of Congress, and the post appointments he will make shortly after Inauguration, our nation stands poised to impact the lives of theAmerican family and the global community.

We stand at the precipice of an opportunity never before seen in history, which may not be matched in our lifetime!  This is an exciting day, and members of Kappa Alpha Lambda remain committed to efforts in the political and philanthropic arenas.

Official Certifying Organization

In a continued show of support for the spirit of hope and change in America, Kappa Alpha Lambda is proud to announce our newly approved status as a certifying organization for the Presidential Volunteer Service Awards.  Kappa, in Her efforts to promote philanthropy in the LGBT community, encourages continual community-oriented involvement.  We are pleased to have been approved as the first  LGBT-oriented Greek lettered organization to hold this distinction.

We look forward to fulfilling our mission, and supporting the President-elect, as a new partner organization of the Presidential Volunteer Service Awards!

National Lesbian Sorority partners with Rock the Vote to raise Political Awareness

The National President of Kappa Alpha Lambda Sorority, Inc. announced a newly formed partnership with Rock the Vote today, stating that the Sorority is “committed to political awareness in all communities.”   As part of the organization’s Five Facet Philanthropic Program, the Sorority created an initiative to offer the registration opportunity to Sorority supporters, friends, and the general public.

Starting September 1st, local colonies and chapters will host a variety of informative and exciting voter focused programs to encourage LGBT and mainstream voters to mobilize for change in America.

Each colony and chapter has the opportunity to develop program partnerships with several local groups to increase the ability to reach prospective voters.  From high school and college organizations, to local civic groups, Kappa Alpha Lambda plans to reach out to make an impact in the current and future elections.

Colonies consist of a group of young women in an area who have an expressed interest in, or are current Members of, Kappa Alpha Lambda.   They must have a desire to serve their community & make an impact by bringing the Sorority to their area.

Requirements to be considered for Colony status are:

1. A minimum of 5 Interested ladies willing to work toward the creation of a Colony.
2. Submission of Individual Applications of Interest, as well as a group Expansion Application, including an Interest Group roster.
3. Regular contact with a Grand Chapter Official, to maintain guidance on the process of becoming an approved Colony.
4.  Ten hours of community service as a group (a portion of these hours count toward the individual service requirement).
4. Acceptance into the Kappa Alpha Lambda Sorority, Inc. MIP.
5. A complete Expansion Process Packet on file with the Sorority’s National Offices.

Further information concerning the Expansion Process will be given upon review of the Interest Group by the Grand Chapter.

Kappa Alpha Lambda was founded October 19th, 2003.

2. What are your Sorority’s colors?

The colors of KAL are Pink, Black, and Pearl.

3. What is your Sorority’s flower?

Kappa Alpha Lambda has two official flowers. They are the Lotus and the Orchid.

4. Does your Sorority have a mascot?

Yes, Kappa has two animal mascots. Our most recognizable is the white bunny.

5.  Is Kappa Alpha Lambda bound to any other Fraternal Organization?

No, KAL is not constitutionally affiliated with any other fraternal organization. We do, however, have a fraternal relationship with Alpha Lambda Zeta Fraternity, Inc.

6. Is Kappa Alpha Lambda a collegiate Sorority?

No. Though we will be expanding to include collegiate chapters, KAL is a comprehensive social service Sorority, including professional women from all walks of life.

7. Is KAL strictly a Lesbian Sorority?

Although Kappa Alpha Lambda is an advocacy group for the rights of all women, KAL is a Lesbian-oriented Sorority.

8. Are members of KAL allowed to pursue membership in other organizations?

Members of Kappa Alpha Lambda can freely pursue membership in any other Sorority of their choice, provided their Membership in that organization does not interfere with their commitment to the Mission of Kappa Alpha Lambda. Therefore, a prospective Member of KAL cannot be a current or former Member or Interest of any LGBT Sorority.

The first step to starting a colony in your area is to fill out an Application of Interest on our National website.  You can do that here.

Once that step is complete, you’ll be contacted by a Member of the Sorority about how to move forward.  Be sure to fill out your application TODAY!  We are accepting Applications of Interest for our Fall Membership Intake right now!

If your friends feel the same way you do, (and we’re sure they do), tell them to get their Applications in ASAP.  We have big plans for the next few months…

When I began my research on LGBT organizations, I was impressed by the depth of Kappa’s Mission, its Facets, the strides completed, and the plans for the Sorority’s future. I knew that this is where I belonged, where my heart was searching for all along!

Finally, I’d found women who want to make a lasting difference in this world… women who want to leave a legacy for the following generations for our community, and society as a whole.

After ongoing interactions with the Ladies of Kappa, it was confirmed. I saw what I strove to be in them -

“I saw mentors, friends, and women that I would love to call my sister. I saw women who were sophisticated, independent thinkers, who blazed the path for social improvement. I saw my place among them.“

Now that I’m a Lady of Kappa Alpha Lambda Sorority, Incorporated, I know this is where I belong!  Life is so KAPtivating on this side; simply beautiful… I’m home.”
